Postage Stamps
Collecting topicals (stamps with a single topic theme) is popular. Examples of topics collected may be birds, ships, Olympics, etc. Our interest is rowing. There's been a large number of rowing stamps issued by various countries. Some images are commemorative such as Olympic rowing, World Rowing Championships, and championship crews/scullers while some are part of a collection of sports. Olympic years always produce some new issues. The question is, what images should be deemed rowing images? Some issues are multi-sport. How significant an image should there be and still be included in the class? The Cyprus (Greece) stamp for the 1976 Olympics has a very small image of rowing. If it can be easily identified as a rowing image, then let's include it. Many sports stamps such as Olympic issues have a series of sports pictograms illustrated on them. If we include these fringe rowing issues, there are well over 300 rowing stamps in the class from the first in 1925 until today. In each Olympic year another ten or twelve stamps are issued while in the off years a few are produced. Usually the host country of the World Championships and/or Olympic Games will issue a stamp.
It is a bit surprising that the countries that have the longest association with rowing are the ones with the fewest issues. Great Britain has only issued one rowing stamp (commemorating the 1986 Commonwealth Games), nothing from hosting two Olympics, nor the famous annual Henley Royal Regatta, nor the traditional Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race. The United States, Australia and New Zealand have three each while Argentina, Cuba and Canada have four. Nicaragua has eleven, most of which are in a set and Germany (East and West) has thirteen. Yugoslavia totals fourteen which includes the 1935 set of five. Romania has the greatest number with nineteen (as of 2002). Souvenir sheets (ss or s/s) are collector's issues that have an enhanced/expanded image such as the Russian issue shown here. The souvenir sheets were usually issued as an individual stamp as well.
Another collectors specialty is First Day Covers (FDC). FDCs were usually commercially printed and postally cancelled with a special cancellation mark noting First Day of Issue and the date. Here is a very special issue with the silk cachet of Ned Hanlan.
Other terms and abbreviations that you may see are:
Covers are envelopes with a special image, designation, and/or description about rowing and printed stationery likewise.
The Russian cover just above and the German cover just below have rowing cancellations or postmarks. This could be another collecting sub-category.
A sheetlet is a sheet of stamps with multiple images.
Maybe you'll see something described as local post. A local post is a mail service that operates only within a limited geographical area, typically a city or a single transportation route. Historically, some local posts have been operated by governments, while others, known as private local posts have been for-profit companies. (see Netherlands 1988) There's a very good web page with a philatelic glossary. ______________________________________________________ There are a few popular stamp catalogue publishers. Scott is a favorite of many American collectors. Most libraries stock the catalogues in their reference sections. Another system used more by European collectors is the Michel catalogue numbers. There is no correlation between these systems. Rafael Monteavaro Garcia (Spain) produced an English-Spanish catalogue of rowing postal stamps through 1997. It has images of most stamps and a directory by country as well. Well worth obtaining. A Collection The following is a listing of rowing topical images that a few collectors (Bill Miller, Kerry Ahearn and Helmut Mensch) have submitted for the site. Thanks to Kerry Ahearn and Helmut Mensch for all their help and expertise. Note: The Scott numbers correspond to the Scott catalogue numbering system, however, there have been some irregularities and occasional mis-numberings. A few Scott entries were listed as rowing but were canoeing or kayaking and others the opposite. Also, some stamps are un-catalogued. Please, use these numbers as a guide for there may be errors/inaccuracies.
