New England
Interscholastic Rowing Association
History and Regatta Records
_____________________________________
A Brief History
Special thanks to Rich Davis of St.
Paul’s for contributing the major portion of this short history. Apologies to
the many valued participants of the Association, past and present, who for
reason of brevity were not given their due measure of recognition.
Prior to the first regatta in 1947, several school coaches
held organizational meetings at the Harvard Club in Boston, choosing the name
"New England Interscholastic Regatta". At the 1949 annual meeting in Boston, the
first officers were elected: Director - Ken Burns, Secretary - Dave Lanier, and
chairmen for both the fours and eights.
Until 1959, the headquarters for the races was the Shrewsbury Boat Club,
south of the route 9 bridge. Over the years, the schools decided to launch their
shells from the beach, near the present finish line by walking the boats into
the water. New facilities added by 1959 allowed the headquarters to be moved to
Regatta Point and by 1960 the facilities were complete and looked much as they
do today.
The 1947 regatta had heats, consolations and finals for the First and
Second Boys’ Fours, and finals for the First and Second Boys’ Eights, with about
ten schools in the Fours and four schools in the Eights. No records were kept of
the entries, but the winners appear on the Father Sill Trophies - Pomfret in
First Fours and Kent on First Eights.
The member schools in 1951 (the first time recorded) were:
Fours - Belmont Hill, Choate, Gunnery, Salisbury, St.
George’s, Brown & Nichols, Phillips Exeter, Pomfret, South Kent, and St. Mark’s
Eights - Kent, Halcyon and Shattuck (clubs from St. Paul’s),
Shrewsbury, and Tabor.
In 1955, the organization name became New England Interscholastic
Rowing Association.
In 1956, at the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Kent School, Mrs.
Julier, sister of Father Sill, donated two Revere Bowls in memory of the Kent
Headmaster, Father Frederick H. Sill, to be awarded to the winners of the First
Eights and First Fours. In the same year, Phillips Academy Andover and
Springfield Technical joined the Association, rowing in eights. In 1959, Brooks
and Middlesex joined and in 1961, Groton and Noble & Greenough all rowing in
fours.
The Association voted that each school should wear distinctive colored
crewshirts to help identify the order of finish and that there be an official
program with lane assignments and times of the races, which Charlie Swift
produced.
In 1962, singles were added, to be run during the lunch hour. Also in
1962, J. Satterthwaite of Groton raised funds for the "Ox" Kingsbury Cup, to be
awarded to the winner of the Second Fours. Mr. Kingsbury had coached at Brooks.
Ken Burns of Shrewsbury raised money for the Dixon "Tote" Walker Cup, to be
awarded to the winner of the Second Eights. Mr. Walker coached at Kent.
In 1964, St. John’s High School joined the Association; in 1967, Mt.
Herman; and in 1968, St. Paul’s sent crews representing the school. Since then,
membership has continued to grow.
Until 1970, the Eights raced one mile and the Fours, three-quarters of a
mile. In 1979 the Fours and Singles switched to 1500 meters, and there were two
finish lines. In 1972, all crews rowed 1500 meters. When the girls’ crews joined
in 1974, the Eights raced 1500 meters and the Fours 1000 meters.
By 1970, Dave Lanier retired from teaching and the Association lost its
competent and faithful Secretary-Treasurer, the only one it had had. In 1972,
Ben Sylvester of Choate presented the Alden Johnson Sculls for the winner of the
Senior Singles. The Sculls honor a former Choate rower. In 1974, the Association
voted to give competitor ribbons and to award a small trophy to members of the
winning First Crews and Senior Singles.
In 1977, Robert Warner raised funds to establish the Kenneth F. Burns
Trophy, to be awarded annually to the winner of the First Girls’ Eights race.
This trophy honors the man who has done the most for the Regatta, and who had
been rowing and racing on Lake Quinsigamond throughout his life. Winners since
1974 have been inscribed on the Burns Trophy.
Also in 1977, Noble & Greenough School presented the Robert Warner Trophy
for the winner of the Women’s Fours. This trophy honors the retired coach of
Nobles and the Secretary-Treasurer of the NEIRA who almost single-handedly
carried on the business of the Association for seven years. With Bob Warner’s
retirement, a Committee of Management consisting of nine coaches took over his
work.
The regatta lasted two days in 1977. Boys’ Pairs, Girls’ Open Singles, and
Girls’ Double Sculls were added to the event. The one-day format returned in
1978, and the Pairs and Double Sculls were dropped.
In 1979, friends and faculty of St. Paul’s School honored the late
Converse Prudden by establishing the prize for Second Girls’ Eights. Mr. Prudden
was the first coach of girls’ crews at St. Paul’s. His crews won seversl NEIRA
Championships.
In 1980, the Committee accepted two new prizes. The girls of Groton
presented the Robert Parker Award for the Second Girls’ Fours to honor their
former coach. The generosity of Arthur Martin of Martin Marine donated the
Arthur Martin Trainer, a boat to be used for the year by the winner of the Boys’
Singles.
In 1984, fellow coaches and member schools honored Charles M. Swift,
long-time varsity coach of Phillips Exeter and referee of the regatta, with
establishment of the Charles M. Swift Trophy for overall winning school in the
Boys’ Fours.
In 1994, Clint Allen donated the A. Clinton Allen Plate for the winner of
the Third Girls’ Fours and Brian Ford Plate for the winner of the Fourth Girls’
Fours.
In 1995, friends and alumni of Kent School raised money for the W. Hart
Perry Trophy awarded to the school garnering the highest number of points in the
Boys’ Eights. A long-time coach of Kent’s Boys Crew, Hart Perry also served for
a number of years as Chairman of the NEIRA Committee of Management. His
unwavering dedication to the smooth operation and continued growth of the annual
championship helped preserve the best traditions of sportsmanship and athletic
excellence at a time when the Association experienced rapid expansion of
membership. His many efforts on behalf of the regatta have put the Association
in good stead as we look ahead to the next fifty years.
Since the first regatta run for nearly a dozen schools in 1947, the New
England Interscholastic Rowing Association has grown to a day-long event of 53
races for well over 1,000 competitors rowing in several hundred boats,
representing over 35 schools.
