Henley Royal Regatta Notes

compiled by Bill Miller

The first Henley Regatta was held in 1839. It continued annually until 1914 when WWI interrupted. In 1919 a Royal Henley Peace Regatta was organized. Henley Royal Regatta races resumed in 1920 until 1939, when again war interrupted. The regatta resumed in 1945 and continues annually.

In 1851, H.R.H. Prince Albert consented to become “the Patron of, from henceforth, Henley Royal Regatta”.

Henley Regatta was established on a one mile-550 yard clear stretch of open water on the Henley Reach. The early course (1839-1885) became known as the “Old Course” and the start was on the Berkshire side on Temple Island and finished at the Henley Bridge. The “New Course” (1886-1922) was from the Buckinghamshire side on Temple Island to Poplar Point. An “Experimental Course” (1923) was tried on a straight 1-1/2 mile stretch from Temple Island to Poplar Point. In 1924 part of Temple Island was removed to allow for a straight one mile-550 yard course to Poplar Point that is still in use.
